
Hung Kit Chiu
Hung Kit Chiu is a PhD student in Economics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He earned a BSc in Mathematics and Economics from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and an MA in the Social Sciences from the University of Chicago. Prior to joining UCSB, he worked as a research assistant at the Rustandy Center for Social Sector Innovation at the Booth School of Business.
When not buried in data, I cook, travel, and do a bit of road cycling. Specifically, I do endurance cycling, or long-distance cycling, or randonneuring. Below are some of my past bikepacking trips, all self-supported solo.
Summer 2024
Riding from Calais to Nice in France in 8 days while chasing Tour de France stages, passing through Saint-Quentin, Troyes, Dijon, Lyon, Grenoble, Gap, and Barcelonnette. I was also on top of Alpe d’Huez and Col de la Bonette (see photos below).

Shortly after that I rode from Barcelona to Pradollano in the Sierra Nevada in 8 days. Along the way I stayed in Tarragona, València, Alicante, Cartagena, Almería, and Motril. I then stayed for about a month up in the Sierra Nevada and spectated a stage of that year’s Vuelta a España. The trip concluded with a few nights each in Granada and Málaga.

Summer 2023
Riding from Chicago to Seattle in 20 days, including 1 rest day in Great Falls, Montana. The route follows very roughly the “Northern Tier Route”, skipping the portion to the east of Chicago.

Circumnavigating Lake Michigan in 5 days, stopping in Green Bay, Manistique, Traverse City, and Holland.
